Alumni Impact: Meet Elima for World Children's Day
Alumni Impact is a social media campaign that recognizes the excellent work being done by FIUTS alumni all around the world. In honor of World Children’s Day on November 20, meet Elima, a FIUTS SUSI alumna from Angola, and learn about her work teaching English to children!
My name is Elima Cabata from Luanda, Angola. I am graduated in Languages, Translation and Administration at Catholic University of Angola. I am 28 years old. I was lucky to be selected to the SUSI (Study of the U.S Institute) program in 2018 held at the University of Washington and organized by FIUTS, where I represented my country, Angola.
The SUSI program was exactly what I needed to be able to increase my abilities and competencies to apply in various ideas and projects I have been working on.
With the SUSI program I learned to understand different cultural, historical and social aspects of the United States of America. I broadened my knowledge about the functioning of different types of organizations from NGO´s to Business Companies. I have learned leadership skills and styles at all levels from Governmental level, non-profit organizations and businesses. For me this was impactful, because I have always had leadership positions in academic and professional life.

Having to be able to gain so much knowledge and exchange experiences with students from different countries at the University of Washington, I was able to apply them thoroughly in my business called Elinvete. After the SUSI program I created a Language and Academic Consultancy, where I started providing language services, especially to kids from the ages to 4 and 12.
To celebrate Worlds Children’s Day, November 20, I would like to share my experience in teaching and tutoring children. I have been teaching children since 2014 and I have been astonished by the way they are able to learn fast. I have also experience with children with special needs, how ever, I was able to identify other abilities and enhance them and adapt my teaching methods in able to provide the correct assistance.

During my journey, I have experienced joyful moments in teaching English to children. I have been promoting English learning at a young age in my community and have created talks on teaching methods that make them learn and have fun at the same time. With my methodology, I have had great results. I am able to work on their fine motor skills and provide enough literacy skills. I have taught children to read and write in English through phonics.
Information about the upcoming online conference that Elima is organizing
Currently, I am organizing an online kids conference with the theme “Raising Fluent English Kids in Angola”. The mission is to encourage kids start learning English at a young age. I envision that kids are able to become fluent speakers and conquer good opportunities in the future. The objectives are to present different topics that promote general knowledge and create a network of English speaking kids on a national and international scale.
The Study of the US Institute (SUSI) for Student Leaders is a program of the U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, with funding provided by the U.S. Government, administered by Meridian International Center and FIUTS.
SUSI programs promote a better understanding of the people, institutions, and culture of the United States among international students, teachers, and scholars. Study of the U.S. Institutes (SUSIs) are short-term academic programs for groups of undergraduate leaders, educators, and scholars from around the world. Hosted by academic institutions throughout the United States, these 5- to 6-week Institutes include an intensive academic residency and an integrated educational study tour.
